Background information 

PEACE is an acronym for People’s Education, Assistance and Counselling for Empowerment.  Our mission is “to understand, assess, and address the dynamics of violence and trauma as well as the impact of violence and trauma on people’s lives in Namibia; to effect healing and transformation through the identification and development of appropriate psychosocial interventions.”

Our objective is to contribute to a more tolerant society, of well functioning individuals, who can develop themselves to their full potential, who can fulfil their roles and participate in the social and economic development of Namibia.

The primary target group of PEACE Centre are those people who, as a result of structural, domestic, criminal or any other kind of violence, were traumatised. Our target group are individuals or members of communities or groups who socio-economically or politically, are marginalised.

The principles that inform our work are based in the belief that meaningful development is only possible within a context of peace. True peace – however - is only possible where processes of social justice, healing and dialogue are realised. Peace is also achieved through the management of conflict and the elimination of conflict potential, be these personal or structural. We therefore seek to effect a social environment that is democratic, seeks dialogue and is empowering.

Specific Project Objectives

To ensure that trauma survivors and people, whose lives have been impacted by violence have improved access to appropriate and effective psychosocial interventions.
To work towards increased and improved decentralised support and involvement in violence prevention and trauma intervention through strengthening the capacity of other service providers and of community members.
To increase awareness and understanding of the natures of violence, alternatives to violence, the impact of trauma and of how interventions can be helpful.
