The Namibia Children’s Home (NCH) is a cross-cultural center for boys and girls under the age of 18 years that are found in need of care in terms of the Children’s Act (Act 33 of 1960). The primary purpose of the NCH is to set aside the following opportunities for these children: • To improve the general well-being of the children; • To provide proper care; • To secure education for all children; • To keep families together; • To identify the strength in families and support and build on the strength that will contribute to their socio-economic development. Children are nurtured to realize their full potential.
Children that are placed in the NCH custody through the Children’s court proceedings in foster care or place of safety, but also orphans who lost both parents and left without any means of support are placed on a more permanent basis, e.g until they complete their school career or territory studies
The NCH is based on a cottage system. It consists of 14 houses, each with an apartment for a Child Care Officer (Houseparent) and a four bedroom dome for five to eight children. The Child Care Officer is on duty 24 hours a day, with conditions.
Namibia as a relatively new independent and developing country has its challenges and development priorities. Taking care of Orphans and Vulnerable Children is among its priorities. However taking into consideration the magnitude of this task, external assistance is imperative to the Institution.
