  • The Namibian currency is the Namibian Dollar (N$).
  • The Namibian dollar is pegged to the South African Rand. The Rand is universally accepted in Namibia.
  • We advise you to try to leave Namibia with South African currency only as Namibian Dollars attract a lower exchange rate to the Rand outside Namibia.

Banks, ATMs, cheques, credit cards

  • Banks and ATMs are widespread and dispense Namibian Dollars.
  • There is a bank at the airport.
  • Travellers cheques can be exchanged at most banks. A commission will be charged and it is necessary to present your passport when exchanging cheques.
  • Credit card facilities are mostly available in urban centres. MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club are accepted almost everywhere.

Office hours


On weekdays most banks are open from 09.00 am to 15.30 pm and on Saturday from 08.30 am until 11.00 am.


Most businesses and shops are open on weekdays from 08.30 am to 17.00 pm and on Saturday from 09.00 am until 13.00 pm.

Post office

Post offices are open during the week from 08.30 am to 16.00 pm and on Saturday from 08.30 am until 12.00 pm.


Namibia has an efficient, modern telephone network in most parts of the country:

  • In large cities public phones are available.
  • There is a well functioning mobile phone network.
  • Fax facilities are available in most hotels.
  • Internet cafés are present in all large cities.
